Beginning on January 1, 2021, the Chinese beverage industry responded to the national “plastic straw ban” and replaced it with paper straws and biodegradable straws. Because of the relatively low cost, many brands started using paper straws.
Compared with other materials, paper straws have the advantages of environmental protection, low cost, light weight, easy recycling, and no pollution. Because the use of paper straws is still in the early stage and the technology development is not yet mature, there will be some unique weaknesses of paper products in use. For example, in winter, many stores mainly focus on hot drinks and milk tea products. Taro puree, mochi, and paper straws are simply the “mortal enemies” of hot milk tea. The inner wall of the pearl and paper straws will also generate friction and cannot be sucked up. Secondly, fresh fruit tea, drink the flavor of the fruit, no matter how good the paper straw craft is, it will have a taste when it is just produced, and it will cover up the fragrance of the fruit. However, these problems will not always be the shackles that limit the development of paper straws.
At present, the development of paper straws is moving towards the trend of PLA straws. It is believed that the development and utilization of paper straws will become more and more mature and extensive.
